Developing technology that saves lives, changes the world at an individual level. An example of technology that has that impact is organ transplantation.

We were recently joined by OrganOx CEO, Craig Marshall, at our Investor Day event in which he detailed how his company’s mission is to do exactly that: make every donated organ count.

A study published in 2020 found that around 28,000 viable organs were wasted after donation in the United States alone. This is partly due to the window of time that organs ‘placed on ice’ remain viable for transplant. OrganOx have developed technology to extend that window, reconditioning organs often otherwise discarded, and it’s successfully saved thousands of lives already.

The company is at the forefront of changing the way donor organs are preserved in the time between donation and transplantation. Their product, metra, uses patented normothermic perfusion technology to preserve donor livers for up to 24 hours prior to transplant. This is achieved by continuously perfusing the donor liver with oxygenated blood, medications and nutrients at normal body temperature and near physiological pressures and flows.

Find out more about OrganOx and Craig’s journey as CEO in the video below. We discuss enabling more donated organs to be safely used, helping transplants last longer, and bioengineering new organs.
